4” pots with plants in spike/bloom
Psychopsis Kalihi 'Big'
is a highly sought-after, primary orchid hybrid bred by crossing Psychopsis kramerianum and Psychopsis papilio. Widely known as the "Butterfly Orchid", it is famous for its large, striking flowers that resemble a colorful insect or wasp, complete with long, antenna-like petals. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Standout Features
  • Massive Blooms: The 'Big' cultivar produces exceptional flowers that stretch over 6 inches tall. [1]
  • Non-Stop Blooming: It is a sequential bloomer, meaning a single flower spike will produce one bloom at a time, drop it after about three weeks, and open a new bud roughly three weeks later. [1, 2]
  • Persistent Spikes: A single flower spike can continuously bloom for years—sometimes up to 5 to 15 years. Never cut the flower spike, even after the bloom drops. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Essential Care Guide
To keep your Psychopsis thriving, replicate its natural tropical environment:
  • Light: Provide bright, indirect, diffused light. East or west-facing windows are ideal. [1, 2]
  • Watering: Water thoroughly but allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting it sit in soggy medium, but don't let it completely dry out to dust. Reduce watering in winter. [1, 2, 3]
  • Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in intermediate to warm conditions (70°F to 85°F / 20°C to 28°C). Keep humidity levels high, ideally between 60% and 80%, paired with excellent air circulation. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Potting: Use a well-draining orchid mix composed of medium fir bark mixed with sphagnum moss. They prefer to be slightly root-bound, so avoid over-potting.
