The Modest Phalaenopsis is native to Borneo including Sabah, West Kotah, Mt. Kinabalu and Tawau in the province of Elphiastone. It also occurs in the Crocker mountains, in lower stature hill and lower montane forests low down or on the base and roots of trees near streams, at an altitude of 366 m.

Phalaenopsis modesta blooms in the spring and in the fall on a slender, arching to pendant, 5 to 6" (12.5 to 15 cm) long, racemose or occasionally sparsly branched, few to many flowered inflorescence that is shorter than the leaf with disitchous, ovate-lanceolate, cucullate floral bracts and carry a few, somewhat delicate, strongly fragrant flowers. The star-shaped flowers are 2.5-3.8 cm in diameter. The narrow petals of the outer whorl and the broad petals of the inner whorl are white to pale pink. The parts at the base have delicate, purple strips or stripes. These spots gradually turn green. The white lip sometimes has a purple top of the middle plot. The side plots are white, yellow and purple.
