Haraella retrocalla

(commonly known as the Taiwan Fragrant Orchid) is a popular miniature epiphytic orchid endemic to the humid mountain forests of Taiwan. It is prized by hobbyists for its tiny size, ease of care, and remarkably large, fragrant flowers that bloom throughout the year.

  • Size: A true "micro-miniature," the entire plant typically matures at only 1 to 2 inches (2–5 cm) wide.
  • Flowers: Features yellow flowers with a large, fringed lip marked by a deep maroon or purple blotch. The flowers are relatively large compared to the plant's overall size.
  • Fragrance: Known for an intense, sweet citrus or lemon-like scent.
  • Mimicry: The flower's scent and appearance mimic a female beetle to attract male beetles for pollination.
  • Bloom Cycle: It is a sequential bloomer, often producing flowers one after another on short spikes, and can remain in bloom for many months or even year-round in ideal conditions.
Care Requirements
  • Light: Prefers low to medium indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: Highly adaptable, it thrives in intermediate temperatures ranging from 60°F to 80°F (15°C–27°C). It can tolerate cooler nights down to 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: Needs high humidity, ideally 50% to 70%. It is an excellent candidate for terrariums or wardian cases.
  • Watering: Should be kept consistently moist but not soggy. Mounted plants usually require daily misting, while potted plants (often in sphagnum moss) should be watered as the media approaches dryness.
  • Mounting vs. Potting: Most growers prefer mounting it on cork or tree fern to mimic its natural epiphytic habit, but it can also be grown in small pots with sphagnum moss or fine bark.
