Trichocentrum stacyi (Oncidium stacyi)
Unusual and uncommon Trichocentrumspecies found high in the canopy of the tropical rainforests of Bolivia and Peru. Trichocentrum stacyi is among the “rat-tailed” oncidiums—a group with fleshy, cylindrical leaves evolved to tolerate drought.
Plants produce an inflorescence of gorgeous orange and yellow flowers, whose spotty pattern is mirrored in the foliage. Note the pin prick spotting visible in the close-up of the leaves, like tiny freckles.
This slow-growing species is relatively rare in the orchid world. When in bloom, this orchid erupts in a spray of large flowers speckled in mahogany and yellow that last several weeks. Our plants are mounted on plastic mount that won’t rot . They should be slab-mounted to grow with the leaves hanging down, preferably during the spring months of April or May. Eventually, leaves can grow to 18 to 40 inches or longer. The roots have lots of hairs, indicating that this species likes to be on the moist side.
