How to Grow Rhynchostylis Foxtail Orchid Growing foxtail orchid isn’t difficult, and is largely a matter of replicating the plant’s natural environment. Rhynchostylis orchids are epiphytic plants that grow on tree trunks in warm, tropical climates. Foxtail orchid plants don’t do well in direct sunlight, but they thrive in filtered or dappled light. The species is named after American Botanist Ames in 1900. Later in 1982 four species were recognized. Subsequently, Christenson revised and came out with eight species. The plant produces bloom in fall and winter on a simple or branched axillary racemose inflorescence. Flowers are ovate – and has several fragrant flowers which opens slowly thus extending the entire flowering time. The flowers are beautiful with pink, purple and white flowers. The unique feature of this plant is the pollination. The plant does not depend on any mode of pollination either insects or wind. It is observed that the plant fertilizes itself by removing the anther cap and the pollen twisting itself so that it lodges on the stigmatic surface to enable fertilization. This feature is so exclusive that flowers may not even transfer pollen to other flowers on the same plant.

Culture: This grows in its habitat as an epiphyte or a lithophyte. Plants require intermediate temperatures and need bright light like that of Cattleyas. Under cultivation, plants can be best on mounted for good results. They can also be planted in baskets and in pots with well drained media. On mounting plants should be watered regularly. Be careful with over watering in case it is potted. It really likes intermediate temperatures during summer and will not mind a cool winter. It needs bright and strong light for better growth and flowering. As the plant is vandaceous in nature without pseudobulbs, they need regular and frequent watering with good drainage when potted. During the growing period a balanced fertilizer such as 19-19-19 at the rate of 1 gram per liter will benefit the plant. Southern growers tend toward coarser potting media like medium fir bark or coconut husk chunks often ammended with additives: Diatomite, sponge rock or chunky peat. We use sphagnum moss in clay pots for all of our Phals here and will often add some lava rock or charcoal chunks to open it up a bit. Most growers use plastic pots because it retains moisture better but here in hot Florida we find the moisture evaporative qualities of clay may help keep roots a little cooler. If you have the luxury of space, Phaahaenopis grow nicely in hanging pots that allow the leaves to droop naturally. One reason for this may be their extreme rarity in nature. They are apparently found only along two or three streams in a small area of Brazil. Beginning in the 1970s, a number of plants were imported from Brazil. Although it is still not common in collections, a number of growers now sell seedlings grown from these original imports.<head><meta charset="UTF-8" /></head>

CULTURE FOR THIS CATTLEYA

New growths emerge in early spring and blooming occurs after the growths mature in April through June. Although there is no rain during the summer, the dews are extremely heavy, so that there is no extremely dry season for these plants in nature when they completely dry out.

Most successful growers of this species seem to grow their plants a little on the dry side during the autumn and winter. When plants are actively growing in spring and summer, they are given more water.

My experience has been that plants are larger and more robust when grown in containers, rather than on mounts. In order to allow them to dry out properly between waterings, pot in a porous medium such as plain medium fir bark. Do not attempt to grow this species in peat-based mixes. It may be that using a clay pot is also a good idea, but the most important thing is to use a porous mix such as plain medium-grade fir bark. For plants in 5- and 6-inch pots, I use clay and plastic interchangeably.
